Some of the ancient stories about the origins of language and communication include the story of Pharaoh Psamtik, who sought to discover the most ancient human language by isolating two infants from human speech; the Chinese tradition of the Golden Age under Emperor Shin Hoang, an age of harmony and unity in religion, law, and speech; and the story of a primeval tongue preserved in some Irish legends called Gortigheam. Additionally, there are myths and legends among American Indian tribes, particularly the Maya tribes, which describe the existence of a common tongue and its sudden confusion, as found in the holy book of the Quiche tribe of Guatemala called the Popol Buh.
